You Get What You Pay For
I have been looking for a new knife set for our new home for awhile and saw these knifes were the right price and had a good rating so I went to the store to check them out but in the store they make it so you cannot remove the knifes I thought the handle looked cheap but again it had such a great review I thought I can't go wrong,Well I got them home and compared them to my old knifes they cut the same as my now rusted and dull knifes and the blade is very cheap I took mine back to the store and ordered a set from online for twice the cost but 5x the quality...Please Avoid These Knifes There A waste Of Money!

better than i excpected
i bought these knives purely because they were inexpensive. i am getting married in a year and was planning on getting a set of really expensive ones for a gift. for $20 i wasnt expecting much, but these are so great! they work well, and i've been using them for 3 months so far and they have not rusted or dulled one bit, even when i put them in the dishwasher instead of handwashing. i recommend these for anyone, whether you are looking for a cheap set to last you a couple years or a decent set to last you years and years.

5 Years Old and Still Going Strong
I bought this set of knives from target more than 5 years ago and still use it on a daily basis in my kitchen.

The secret to their longevity, I think, has been the regular use of an electric knife sharpener to keep the set on it's toes. So far, none of the knives has failed to stay sharp nor have any exhibited any sign of of rivet failure.

At this price you can't go wrong!

Great knife, but quality it ain't
I made the mistake of purchasing this knife set before I read the reviews listed here. Like several others, three of my knives had cracks in them near the rivets. In addition, there were obvious quality concerns in the construction of the knives. That's why I packed up these knives and sent them back to where I purchased them. In spite of obvious flaws, they are good knives and extremely well balanced, although I would have preferred a more ergonomic handle (it's kind of thin). In fact, I saw a Chicago Cutlery Centurion three knife gift set (same knives, different name) at [a local store] for [a low cost], so I purchased it. These knives had no cracks and clearly had higher quality construction. I guess they save the lower quality knives for their sets.

Great for the average cook
I consider myself a savvy shopper and usually do my homework before making a purchase. This includes reading any reviews I can find. I read the ones posted here and I must admit I stewed over making this purchase for about a week and finally came to the conclusion that what was considered a "higher quality" or more expensive set of knives such as Henkel or Wustoff wasn't needed in our household. We are the average busy family with no more than 3 or 4 meals a week cooked here. Thus, eliminating the need to spend more money. I have always considered Chicago Cutlery to be quality in my book, and I am very pleased with my purchase. I also want to note that I didn't have the problem with the cracked handles as some reviewers had stated. They were just fine, and I love being able to throw them in the dishwasher!

Good Knives
I have this set and I like it quite a bit. I prefer the bakelite handle with rivets to any other design (wood changes over time, regular plastic doesnt feel nearly as nice, and I don't care for the look of stainless handles).

I did not have a problem with cracked handles. I assume they will stay that way (I don't see how they could crack through normal use, since the blade is a full hilt design).

All these knives are straight edge (except the bread knife) with forged blades (better than stamped blades).

All in all a good set for people who don't want to spend lots of money on knives (like me).

    Too Late
I received these knives as a wedding gift. Being new to the domestic life, I was not aware that knives should be handwashed. Hence, rust has occured. Now what is the best way to get rid of the rust, so they may be used again. I also had troble locating their website on the internet.

Good blades, good selection, but flimsy
I bought this set, tested it, comparing the chef's knife and paring knives against my Henkel's **** paring knife and my Solingen chef's knife. I wanted to find a day to day knife set with steak knives to replace my old crappy serrated set. And I was very pleased with their sharpness and with the selection of blades. Much more useful than most large sets. However, after I started taking out all the knives I realized how flimsy many were. They may or may not be full tang, but certainly the blade is not connected to the bolster and I can believe that the previous reviewer has had problems with them breaking. If you don't need steak knives, the smaller forged set of Chefmate look good, but I would not suggest buying these. You may even be better off with the cheaper full tang stainless set.

    Great Knives!
I bought a set of Chefsmate knives a few years ago and love them. My set have a nice thick bolster to prevent my fingers from getting chopped off and metal rivets to secure them to the handle. I am not sure if this set has that construction, but these are quality knives. They are sharp, reliable, and have a nice weight to them.

Now to the main issue that I hear in these comments... The rust that happens on the blades... I cringe to hear that someone put them in the dishwasher! Kitchen knives deserve way more care than that. Use the knife, clean the knife with NON-LEMON TYPE detergent, and then dry after use. (Remember that citric acid will rust metal as is true in all cases) Do this to these and they will last

    Broken
I bought this item and it was broken. Getting a new one was a pain in the rear. Nobody knew how I could get this item if the current store did not have this item. buying from Taget was a real lousy experience. I usually shop at Walmart and unless I get a response from the email I set earlier I will start doing all my shopping at Walmart. Better service when returns/exchanges are done is greatly in need of improvement. A dissatisfied customer. James Snow

Good Quality Could be Better Weighted
For all stainless knives these are very good quality. They ship sharp and ready to use. As with most forged steel knives (even high end ones!) they do need to be sharpened occasionally with the included steel. What would be nice is if the hilt had a bit more heft to them to balance the blade. They seem to be "hollow". I wonder why that is. But otherwise they perform flawlessly. A good buy!

    These are very good knives!
We've had these for a few months now, so we've had a chance to use them. They look great and all but one were very sharp when they arrived. The part that says they never need sharping is wrong and should be corrected. They are very comfortable to hold. The block looks fine. They are very good knives and a good value.

    Sharpening Steel
Actually, a sharpening steel is not for sharpening at all; it is for honing. To hone a blade is to re-straighten the edge of the blade--a blade's edge can get bent over by use. Sharpening, on the other hand, is to create a new blade edge. I assume that the "never needs sharpening" of these knives means that with regular honing via the "sharpening" steel will eliminate the need to sharpen the blades in the proper sense of the word.

    Chefmate = Cheapmate
I too have had a very bad experience with these knives. I have had them for about four months and all of them have rusted and almost all of them have lost there rivets. This product in my opinion is junk. I paid a good price for them and it is very disapointing to have had this problem. I now know not to purchase them in the future and will also spread the word to others who are thinking about purchasing them.

    Not what was expected!
I purchased this item last year for my wife at Christmas. In less that four months the handles on a couple of knifes, the ones we use the most, became loose. Due to failing rivets. As the result, I am very disapointed in the overall quality.

    Mr
How can I get two new steak knives that I lost from the 13-piece set?
