Ouch!
The knives are great. Watch out, though. They are packaged in a set of four, but, I think they were sold as singles. Each knife has a SKU super-glued on the blade. I can attest to the sharpness as I just cut myself. I'm sure the occasional T-bone will be no problem.

Average Set
This set is an average lifespan set, I have had it for two years now and it has started to show quite a bit of wear and beginning to show signs of rusting in small spots.

5 stars (for the price)
First, realize that I bought this set while it was on special, which was a great price. The reviews I read here were mixed, but I figured for the price, at worst these could be a set for rough use and disposable if necessary.

When they arrived, I was not the least bit disappointed. There was not a single flaw on any of the knives, all were reasonably sharp (sharpened up even better on the included steel)They were uniformly ground and not at all sloppy. They have the main features you look for in a knife, high carbon SS, full tangs, solid rivets, etc. The handles are composite, nothing fancy but look very durable.

Yes, this is the lowest Sabatier line (most likely borrowing their name to the manufacurer, but I'm sure they wouldn't do so If they weren't satisfied with the quality and they probably impose cetain standards)and yes made in China not France, but still I think of good quality and I've not seen better (or even close)for near the price I paid. I wish they were still on special as I would be buying them a X-mas gifts.

In all, I got much more than I expected for the price, more even than I would expect for the current Amazon.com price. (I do agree with other reviewers that the MSRP listed is a little out of line on the high side)

Note that one reviewer who claimed to know from knives, complained that they rusted the first time he put them in a dishwasher. Discard this review, as anyone who knows anything about good knives, knows better than to put tham in a dishwasher. The course soap dulls them and long drying time does encourage rust. Good knives are made of high carbon steel to hold an edge. This type of steel is suceptible to rust if left wet. Good knives should be washed and wiped dry immediately after (which is easy).

Bottom line: If you want the best knives available, pay several hundred for Hencels' or Sabatier's best line. If you want a great deal on knives that are excellent quality (more than good enough for most of us, and a magnitude above what various discount or department stores carry) buy these.

Perfect for the Home Chef
I purchased this set because of the Sabatier name, and once again I was over-impressed by the quality it delivered. This set does it all from the hard jobs of carving a 25lb top sirloin roast into perfect steaks to cutting the delicate tomato without crushing it. The bread knife is stellar for those of us who like to make our own bread at home and the steak knives are great for large dinner groups, (six knives instead of the usual four with most sets in this price range). All the knives have an excellent ergonomic friendly design for people like me who put in long hours in our kitchen for the relaxing stress relief of creating fine cullinary works of art. I encourage all chefs, (especially novice chefs), to buy this set. I am positive you will be happily surprized at the quality you get for the price.

not a bad set of knives for the money
I purchased this set as an intended gift recently, and ended up keeping it for our summer place. I am very surprised at the performance of all the knives, they are almost as effective as my very high priced German ones (you know the name). Despite their having been made in China, the handles are still intact and about the only complaint I have is that two of the "Sabatier" medalions have fallen off the handles. One cannot find a comparable set of knives in a discount store, and these would make an excellent gift for someone who is just getting started or people who will never purchase a "good" knife on their own. They also sharpen well and easily, but not with the sharpener provided. My son, who is a chef, has used them on occasion and although he wasn't as impressed with their performanceand quality as I am, agreed that I got a "hell of a deal". You simply can't go wrong with this purchase. i am now ordering another set (as a gift, once again!).

Best Cost / Quality Ratio, What a Bargain!
Are they worth it?? Most definitely! But don't expect these knives to be on par with likes of GOOD Henkels or Wusthof. This is an extremely capable set of knives. They are made with high quality materials. Thick steel blades nicely tapered into the handle, give good cut precision without the wander of flexible, thinner blades. Solid rubber-like thick handles give a good grippy feel and control. And, a horizontally-slotted block so you don't carve away at the holes each time you return the knife to its home. But then there's the Chinese craftsmanship that prevents these from being a georgeous set of knives. The finish on these pieces isn't fabulous. The handles, although themselves are nice and ergonomic, aren't attached to the steel blades with TLC. Some epoxy appears in the gaps of the rubber/steel junction. The blades are sharp, but the finishing of the steel is subpar; unevenly ground in places, knicked by a honing/polishing device(?) here and there; all tips come to a nice point though. And finally, under examination, the finish on the block is atrocious. The laquer is unevenly applied, there are large-radius disk sanding grooves across the surface, lots of random knicks and scratches, and lastly, my block has a "nice" 1/4" wide by 6" long putty filled knot along the top/back surface. I could sand this block and refinish it nicer myself. But, like I said, this is under close examination. From ordinary sight angles and distances, the set appears well made and ready for action. I would recommend this set since, in my case, they are replacing a set that cost twice as much and was about half the quality. Given their reasonably acceptable appearance, good weight and balance, sturdy construction, and quality materials I am tatolly pleased with my purchase; and unless you're a knife critic (in which case you should be looking elsewhere anyway), then you should be pleased too. This gets 5 stars simply for its quality/cost ratio. You CAN'T find a better knife set at this price!

Edit: I changed the score to 4 out of 5 stars because the price of this set has gone up considerably since my purchase.

How can you be disappointed?
It never ceases to amaze me that people will buy something like a big knife set like this for under fifty dollars and then have the gall to complain that it's quality is not very good. Of course the quality is not going to compare to Wusthof or Henckels, but if that is the quality you feel you need, then you have no business buying the cheap stuff in the first place.

I give this knife set 5 stars because it is a lot better than I thought it was going to be when I ordered it. People see it sitting on my counter, and they think I have a nice expensive knife set. The knives cut well, and in case they get dull, the set comes with a sharpening steel. I have even cut through inch thick wooden dowel rods with the serrated steak knives. And that's another benefits of these knives... when you've just moved, and you don't know where anything is, and you're pretty sure you don't have a small hand saw anyway, you can use these knives to cut pretty much whatever you need to, because they cost so little that you don't really care if you mess them up a little anyway. Sometimes it's great to have tools you just don't have to worry about. The surprising thing was that after cutting the wooden dowel rods, the steak knife hadn't even gotten dull. now that is high quality inexpensive kitchen cutlery for you.

The only material and noteworthy flaw these knives have that you may wish to know about before purchasing is that they rust if left in the sink for a couple days. I'm not talking about big flaky rust here, just brown discoloration that is difficult to clean off. I never expected them to be truly stainless anyway, so this was more a laughing point with my roommates than a disappointment.

    Pretty....but
I really love this set, HOWEVER, within several weeks two knives had broken, and several spoons are loose......So, my advice is to buy extra if you really love it and were naive like me and bought the dishes to match....or if you're hard on flatware (ie.use it every day like I do, and have children), then you may want to pick out a sturdier set. I do want to say that these haven't been washed in a dishwasher, so that isn't a concern in my case. I guess they're not made to be used everyday.

    Good value
This is a decent set of knives at a good price. All these knives feel properly balanced in the hand. After six months of use, there are no rust spots or discolorations. I typically air dry the smaller knives, and hand dry the long ones, always hand washing.

Some of the knives were not quite as sharp as could be, but it was not hard to sharpen them. Note that the 8" sharpener that comes in the set is not very good quality, and my 10" sharpener will not fit in this block. The sharpener slot will also accomodate a knife with about a 1" blade.

The steak knives with black handles look great at the table. The Precision tomato knife (size of steak knife) is the perfect size for the 14th slot, if still available.

This set is a good value at the clearance price. The steak knives alone, or the block alone, are worth the price. Don't expect to get a top of the line professional set at this price, and you will not be disappointed.

    Excellent Product For The Price!
I am very pleased with both the quality of the steel and the construction of the knives! I have worked as an Executive Chef in Clubs and Resorts for over 25 years and while I thought this deal was too good to be true for the price, I still purchased it for my home. I actually found them to be of exceptional quality for an exceptional value! I have a good set of the , so the other reviewer says, "Store Quality" knives and find THIS set to be superior! Don't get me wrong. They don't compare to my set at my establishemnt but, I have close to... invested it those tools! You do get EXACTLY what you pay for here! An excellent set of knives for your home!

    Wildly Superior Product!
Anyone who enjoys cooking as much as I do absolutely has to have a high quality set of knives to use in appraoching the cooking labor of love. Whether making a salad or preparing chicken or beef, there is nothing like the right tool to help you along your merry way. here we have a whole set of superior alternatives to choose from for each particular task. You have 14-pieces of cutlery in this block set from Sabatier. It contains: a 3-1/2-inch paring knife, 8-inch chef knife, 8-inch slicer, 8-inch bread knife, 6-inch boning knife, six (count 'em) 5-inch steak knives, a pair of kitchen shears, a sharpening steel, and a 14-slot block to keep them in. And believe me, they are durable and easy to maintain, being high quality stainless steel. In fact, they are made from high-carbon stainless steel, an industry standard, with full tangs, so the steel extends all the way through the handle. These knives are light but durable, and while they aren';t the ultimate, for amere $40 you can have a high quality set that will work long and well for you. Enjoy!

This is probably not what you expect
I thought Sabatier was a French Company with excellent product. However, this set is made in China for Excel and not the quality that I expected. In this case, you get what you pay for

    For the price...
this set is a great deal. The knife holds and cuts well. The set will probably last a while if proper care is taken (proper drying, regular sharpening, etc..). However, don't expect to impress the French cuisine afficionado; it is made in China!

    Beautiful Set
I bought these because of the name and the price. The name I associated with quality cutlery and the price, well... just couldn't be beat! This was a total impulse buy, I didn't need them, I haven't used them either but they came packaged so nicely and they have weight and style... I plan to keep them on hand for gift giving or at least until I need them myself. They may be hard to part with. Great item.
