Not bad, but not great either!
Quality Cookware at Bargain Priceholder are an added bonus. Some of the utensils aren't very practical but considering the value of the pots and bowls, even if you don't use most of the utensils (the ladle is too shallow)
you can't go wrong with this set.
Wow, awesome set!I purchased a plastic spatula to use with the non-stick frying pans, and have yet to scratch the surface of them. They work great too.
IMO, this is very worth it for the price. I do a lot of cooking with this set, and I enjoy using it; no complaints.

Really not impressed with this lineI only bought the tomato knife as it was listed as made in France -- and I hoped it would address some of my complaints below. Nope -- it is the equivalent of the steak knives. :(
The bread knife is OK, the chef knife is adequate, and the paring knife not bad. However the serrated steak knives are not particularly sharp and are too thick to slice things cleanly. I had a set of cheap Tramontina knives, which this set replaced, fortunately I kept a few of the Tramontina steak knives which are FAR better than the Sabatier steak knives. The bigger knives are better in the Sabatier set -- heavier -- but they don't maintain their edge particularly well and they get discoloration spots -- which is really annoying in "stainless steel".
Give me my Henckel chef's knife any day.
A good knife

DON'T HASSLE WITH THE HEADACHE
$50 is still steep for this chintzy collectionI suppose my reaction isn't to the knives themselves-- I haven't even opened them since I imagine they are much like the other Sabatier set I purchased and those are adequate but nowhere near Henckel quality. My surprise and dismay really stems from the thin metal of the measuring cups and spoons. Not only are they tinny and poorly made, their edges are so sharp that you can slice a brick of cheese with them (not good for a working cook)! The handled accessories were somewhat better in quality, but you'd do better buying them either individually to suit your needs or elsewhere... And the wood block that I received was dark and ugly; not a huge problem, but again, an obvious instance of cutting quality corners.
Overall, if you're looking for a starter set for college and don't need to impress too many people (including yourself), this is a great deal. You get more knives at a better price than you could find at Target or Wal-Mart (or elsewhere), plus the extra accoutrements to round out your initial cooking toolset.
For established cooks, or even casual connoisseurs, either spend a little more on one of the other sets Amazon offers or build your knive collection one at a time, spending as you're able, to obtain lasting, quality cutlery.
As the saying goes, you get what you pay for, and in this case, that truism applies doubly! Just because this set looks like a great deal at $50, you're ultimately going to get what you pay for.
Perfect starter setThe knife set comes with a sharpener, so you can sharpen the flat blade knives. I would recommend hand washing and drying the knives since one of ours has rust spots from when water sat on the blade overnight.
The plastic utensils come with every type you can imagine one would need. I only had to buy a wooden spoon.
We had a chef friend cook for us and he thought the knives were fine!

Not as described
Precision Line Made in ChinaI have this knife which I received as part of a 14pc knife set. I still use some of the knives but not this parer. The precision line is fine as far as pressed knives go. They have a full tang but no bolster. The synthetic handle is easy to maintain. The weight is good for pressed knives. ...
If you don't have any experience with good knives consider doing some research and buying a discounted piece or two (or five) of the various lines once you feel comfortable.
Also, consider ergonomic factors like the relation of the handle design to your hand size or the weight of the knives to your strength. If you buy knives with an uncomfortable handle you might miss your old 3/4 tang oxo parer instead of realizing what junk it was and how could you have used it for so long!
Finally, consider how you will care for the knife before buying anything as low maintainence knives are often cheap while quality knives require loving care to maintain their awesome performance.
