I was pleasently pleased with the sharpness and balance of these knives. I agree with the other reviewer, the point is too sharp and can cause the blade tip to bend without much effort. For the price I would highley recommend this item.

Although made in China, they still carry the Sabatier name and obviously maintain the reputation. While not the greatest knife on the planet (can never beat good German Steel), they are a fantastic knife at a phenomenal price. They are sharp enough out of the box to do the job, and hold their edge well. I have eaten at several steakhouses, and in some of them, I would have liked to see a knife of this quality.

They are well balanced, and require little effort to cut through a steak, or any other meat.

I would buy another set without question, especially with a deal like this.

My only complaint is that the serations on the tip of the knife cause it be "pointier" than necessary, and can easily be bent into a small "hook." This is a minor annoyance, and if you take care of them, and don't go stabbing things, you can avoid it.

These knives are not perfect as other reviewers have pointed out. IMO, the main problem is the way they were packaged and shipped by Sabatier in France. The wooden holders do not hold the knives snug. This leads to the knives getting minor surface scratches when jostled during shipment. The holders also have left over sawdust and it appears the knives were probably shipped/stored in a dusty environment. As a result the knives are dirty. Better packaging would have eliminated these problems.

So, the knives are dirty and scratched as I mentioned. I cleaned them via a good hand washing and that took care of the dirt and some of the minor scratches.

Now I notice the knives are not uniform. The handles are not joined perfectly as I'd expect from French made Sabatier knives.

On the bright side these knives are pretty much the same Laguiole style steak knives you'll see in top restraunts. They are the sharpest steak knives I've seen and except for some minor defects are quite nice visually.

I ate at Boulevard in San Francisco a couple nights ago and I noticed they use very similar knives which were in much worse shape than the set I got so cheaply at Amazon. So, I figure these knives with a few scratches are probably good enough for my table... will give this deal four stars.

An excellent set of knives for the price. Very nice wood case with high quality knives. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Got a great price on a good knife set. The knife feels good in your hand they cut very well. The wood case is nice because you can leave it in a drawer and not worry about it.

We have been absolutely delighted with this set of knives. They have great balance, feel pleasing in your hand, and cut flawlessly. What really sets them apart, though, is the style -- most steak knives are either dark-handled, bulky, or both, so you only want to brink them out when you're actually tackling a hunk of red meat. The slim, silver silhouette of this Laguiole fits in unobtrusively with your regular flatware, so you may find yourself using them far more often. Even a chicken dinner turns out to benefit from sharp knives. Our table knives don't make it out of the drawer much at dinner time these days!

I bought these knives for my mother-in-law (an avid steak eater!) for Christmas. She uses them every time she cooks steak, and now, a year later, they cut as flawlessly as they did the first day of use. They make cutting steak effortless. I highly recommend them.

The Sabatier Laguiole Stainless steel steak knives are the finest I have been able to find. The blades have a full tang and the balance is excellent. I have used Sabatier knives in the kitchen for over forty years. I think these knives are a wonderful value and would make a great present for anyone. The storage case they came in is dreadful, but a nice case can be purchased. All in all, we are very pleased with the knives.

I've been reading a bunch of reviews on these knives on Amazon..., and they're either really high ratings or really poor ones. I think that part of the confusion is that these are SABATIER Laguiole steak knives (as marked on the blade) *not* Laguiole steak knives (which will have just that Laguiole name and no Sabatier). Seems that these have a thinner blade than the Laguiole ones, and from the pix - the blade looks different as well (has a different edge finish).

I think these are the ones that are being rated lower *NOT* the Laguiole ones (Laguiole - not Sabatier - makes their own Advantage range; these are the dishwasher safe ones that look similar to these BUT w/a huge price difference!). ...I don't know why/how Sabatier ended up having a Laguiole line of steak knives/tableware.

Also - FYI for some of the reviews that I have read elsewhere criticizing the funny shape of these knives... French knives are NOT designed like German knives (like Wusthof)! This is much more true of kitchen knives than steak knives, but French knives are usually much more sleek and triangular than their German counerparts. For the kitchen knives, it means you use a different motion to cut (you slice rather than rock) b/c the bolster is different and you can cut higher up on the blade (use more length). B/c of that, it also means that when you sharpen the French knives, you will be sharpening the entire length of the knife. If you talk to a professional cutlery expert, you can get more clarification.

As such for these knives, Sabatier makes good knives (esp. if you buy the Thiers-Issard ones of theirs (a few hundred of $$ for a set of 6) and Laguiole make killer knives. However, these aren't either one of them...

I bought these knives through another source and while they certainly aren't "Wusthof quality", they are durable and very sharp. They are serrated and that is not my preference. However, my Chef's Choice sharpener keeps them razor sharp. I would not put them in a dishwasher - as is true of all my knives. A good value - in my opinion.

These new knives for us, are not only gorgeous, but work remarkable well. The reason we say that is due to the reviews these knives in previous reviews. We have found no problems, either with the looks, and especially their cutting performance! Using these knives on steak is a breeze, not to mention any other of the fine meats we have cooked. But the best feature, besides working like a charm, is the looks compared to our former Cutco wonders! They are FAR more elegant, and are far above the cutting expectations we hoped for. A fine product for everyday use, as well as special occasions!! ENJOY!

These are cheap knock-offs, feather light and a sad misrepresentation of the fine Lagioule name. Buy anything else, because you won't like these ratty little cheapos.

these knives are meant ot capitalize on the languiole name, a famous design of knife with pistol grips and a fold-in blade. .... the knives are ...imitations of the original thing. The blades are stamped stainless steel, and feature a serrated edge--heresy to a steak lover who cut meat, not tear it. the handles are small, and lightweight, there is almost no heft to it, and it feels like you are holding a ... plastic knife in your hands. it comes with a ... wooden tray.

This set of knives is beautifull. They are sturdy and very well made. The price is well worth the product and I think it's a great value for the money. Let's face it most of the time you get what you pay for, These on the other hand defy that logic not by alot but defy it none the less. I would encourage anyone looking for a decent set of steak knives and arent willing to pay the big $$$, to pick these up. You won't be dissappointed.

I Purchased a set simply because they came close in design to our everyday flatware. They come in a nice pine box which has no lid so they do take up space on a drawer or shelf. The knives themselves are very light weight. Our set (black and steel) was fine with no obvious flaws. The handles are lightweight plastic and the rivets are small so there is a question of how long they will hold up. They would have done better to use resin impregnated wood. The tang does go the length of the grip. These seem as sharp as any steak knives I have used and are quite comfortable in the hand and do afford good control when triming a steak or a chop close to the bone! I would say they are of the same level of quality that you might find at a Woolworths (of sainted memory!) or a K-Mart. Not something to buy if you are really looking to even come close to the traditional high quality of either Sabatier or Laguiole. That said I am planning on buying a second set to match the number of place settings of our everyday flatware.

A grand surprise, these are much better looking and definitely better behaved than any I have bought over the years while paying much more. They are nicely balanced, cut well, and even look good as part of a place setting. The more slender shape, curved handle, and even the position of the Napoleonic bee come together in a nice design that is functional and a pleasure to use. (The little bee-shaped finger rest is a conversation starter too.) I've heard of another set by the same company with bone handles and a much higher price tag. These suit us just fine.

The bumble bee is a known sign for qaulity in France. These type of knives are the same ones used in the top restaurants in France and the rest of the world over. There is not a finer steak knife in the world. I have been to the factory and have seen these craftsmen at work. They create perfection.

the steak knives are butter knives and the carving knife is as sharp as a brick: pure junk I have thrown it all in the trash!

I bought this Sabatier product because it had not been rated. After reviewing many of the other poor Sabatier product ratings that were also made in China, I gave this product the benefit of the doubt and just purchased it. The carving knife is absolutley dull. It has no sharpness. I ran it down my finger to assess its sharpness, but it did nothing. I highly doubt it would be able to cut your meat either. The steak knives on the other hand are a bit better. Although there are some ridges on these knives, they still don't seem sharp. They are rather rough than sharp. I actually haven't tried this set. This rating is based on what I can see and feel. I am going to return this product immediately. I do not plan on wasting my[money]. Have a good day!

I bought this set first because it was so cheap compared to what I saw at the store, and I just wanted a starter set for my new apartment. They are actually really cool looking...modern stainless still look going on. They are not high end fancy knives but for the money I really like mine. They look cool and expensive when I pull them out for dinner!

I shopped for steak knifes, the edges are not fine and they
do not slice nice and easily.
Not the quality I expect for the NAME, definitely the quality for the price.
If you are shopping for price this is a good deal, but if you are thinking true "Sabatier"
forget it...... these are made in China.
