Simply the best vacuum we have ever owned
And we have owned a bunch. We just replaced our Fantom with this Eureka...so we are familiar with bagless/Hepa units. We liked the Fantom but were swayed by the great reviews we saw for Eureka's. This is an order of magnitude better. Our carpets feel softer and look revitalized. Unbeleavable the cat dander and fine silt that this pulled from the carpets. Call me crazy, but even the air in the room smells cleaner. Compared to our Fantom, the filters are easier to change and are more reasonably priced with this unit. We picked this model because we did not need all the bells and whistles on the higher priced rigs. We are extremely happy with our decision. We made sure that we could return it if not completely satisfied...we're gonna keep it. EXCELLENT basic vacuum...super performance.

Gotta Get One!
I just received my vacuum and I just love it. My Mom has the 5740 and it's great too, but I like this one better because of the added features...15" width, the stretch hose and furniture guard are great! The bonus Copperhead I think will work out well for cleaning my car and hard to reach places.
This purchase was to have a second vacuum on hand and I think this one will be getting more activity. If you don't own one - you gotta get one. It's amazing how powerful this vacuum is and how deep it cleans. All I can say is WOW!

A Great Vacuum, I'm glad I did my research
Amazon.com was enormously helpful in researching vacuums. We landed on this vacuum which we finally bought from Costco for pricing reasons. This vacuum is a great deal. It's quieter than out last Hoover, it's powerful, and it's easy to clean.

I just cleaned ours, we have had it for about a year, and cleaned it about 3 or 4 times. We use it EVERY day and have a 1 year old, who is sleeping on our carpet in the living room right now. She never has had a problem from vacuum dust either. Normally all I have to do is empty the can when it gets a little full. Cleaning can be a little labor intensive, but it's all pretty easy. 1 screw and I can have the hose off, the rest of the filters are easy to get to. This vacuum has never left a real alergy problem with us. We never sneeze using it. It will eventually get a vacuum smell as you use it, but if you keep it clean that is minimized.

After researching different options, this is what I found.
Baglass vs Bag Vaccums: Some people like bagless, some like bag. It's really a personal preference issue. I like being able to see what is in the can.
Drive systems: Beware of the Hoover. It uses a plastic geared brush drive mechanism which the salesman at Sears told me has been a real weak spot. The Eureka has a Belt driven brush, which is reliable.
Hepa filter vs Micron Filtration: Hepa filters can filter out particles below .3 Microns. This means your vacuum will filter out smoke as well as other things. Some vacuums claim to have 'Micron' filtration, which filters between 5 Microns and .3 Microns, but it's not Hepa.
Sealed Hepa Filtration systems: The Eureka has a sealed Hepa system, meaning no air gets out past the filter. This includes motor exhaust. This is the only real way to run a filter system. If it's not sealed, it's not doin' much.
Changing HEPA Filters: Do the 'light test'. Hold the filter up to a light. If you can still see light filtering through your filter, it's still good. But DON'T LET YOUR HEPA FILTER GET CLOGGED. It can fry your motor. The Eureka has a very easy to access Hepa filter, so you don't have to dismantle the vacuum to check it.
The hose is a nice addition. My Vacuum did not come with the duster, and I think that would be a nice addition.

Overall, I am glad I did my research and I'm gald I bought this vaccum. Thanks Amazon for posting customer reviews.

Pet owner in Colorado
This vacuum is so AWESOME! My old vacuum broke about three weeks ago and I had been looking to replace it, then I saw this one on HGTV and it struck my interest, so I bought it. It arrived about a week ago. It is amazing how efficiently it sucks up pet hair and dirt. (My husband and I own 2 cats and a dog.) It does not mention that this vacuum is self propelled, but it does seem to pull itself forward. There is a tiny bit of resistance pulling it back toward you, but my house is so clean, and with a lot less effort, I did not care. This vacuum was so much quieter than my old self-propelled Hoover. After vacuuming, there is no "vacuum smell" left behind. Additionally, cleaning out the dust cup is very simple and not as messy as bagless vacuums usually are.

The turbo nozzle is also fabulous. It diplays awesome suction power, but was gentle enough to vacuum a spot off my comforter where our dog had layed.

The spin duster makes dusting around the house much easier and cleaner. The vacuum electrostatically charges it so that it picks up dust like a magnet. When the duster is full of dust, you slip it back in to its holder and the vacuum cleans it and recharges it for you! It is also very gentle and great for dusting delicate items.

We live in a two story house, and this vacuum has a handle on the back side that makes carrying it up and down the stairs much easier. At 18 pounds, it's not too heavy either.

After buying this vacuum and using it, I am shocked that I got it at such a cheap price. I will be recommending it to everyone!

This is a great vacuum!
I was a little hesitant about buying an appliance through the internet but I'm pleasantly surprised and happy! After reading all the other reviews and getting their promo for a $20.00 Amazon gift certificate I decided to buy it. It is great! I can't believe how much better this vacuum is then the old Dirt Devil I was using. This one has great cleaning power, easy to maneuver, fairly quiet and great fun! Yes, fun cleaning the floor! My only complaint is the difficulty in putting the screws in to attach the handle. This really is a great deal!

Can't even handle cheerios!
Sorry folks! Maybe the vacuum works well for some people but I bought it with the intention of vacuuming up cheerios and other small bits of food that end up on the floor after feeding my baby. It doesn't even touch them! I just end up with them all pushed in the corner. I thought it even seemed weak on the carpets. In my opinion, if you only care about carpet tracks or having food pushed in the corner, then this vacuum seems to fit the bill. Like I said, maybe it works well for other purposes but I guess I'll keep searching!

O.k for very lite duty...
I bought this vacuum looking for something to do a quick, easy pick up between vacuums.I have both hard wood floors and braided rugs.Considering this vacuum is light and cordless,it would be great for the kids to help out with.
This vacuum is o.k for very quick, light pick ups.Anything more, say, cheerios on the floor and it won't pick up.Picks up hair just fine. The battery holds a charge for about 10 minutes .Not enough for more than two rooms before it slows down and has no suction.Overall not worth the price.I have used stick vacuums with better suction.

Highly recommended for small cleanup jobs
This is a great little vacuum. I have two cats and I keep the litter box in my bathroom, but the tracked litter demands almost daily vacuuming--I tried a broom and dustpan and it just doesn't quite do the trick. Rather than break out the big vacuum that I use for the carpeting, I keep this little vac plugged in an out of the way corner so that it stays charged. It picks up the litter perfectly and has solved my problem of icky tracked litter sticking to my damp feet when I get out of the shower. The carpet brush is probably not strictly necessary for me but I've found myself using it for little pick-ups of debris on the carpet as well and it works really well.

The suction on this little vacuum is really powerful! I used to have a Euro-pro Shark but I hated it--the suction was terrible, it was horribly noisy, and half the time I would vacuum stuff up and it would fall right back out of the dust cup as soon as I turned the vacuum off! This Eureka is just great in comparison.

Handy And Inexpensive Hand-Vacuum
With four energetic Labrador Retrievers banging around my house, there is no end to the dust and dirt I have to scoop up on a regular basis. But with devices like this for the stairs and hard to get to places, cleaning up after my four best friends is now easier than ever. The stairs seem to always have dog hair on them, especially this time of the year, with the dogs shedding their coats in anticipation of the colder weather to come. SO almost every evening I let them oput back to chase each other while I vacuum the stairs, hallway, and then the main area downstairs in the living room and family room, where we spend most our time. WHile I use a commercial vacuum for the living area, I can use this light, bagless, and quick handy-vac to scoop up the acculumated dettritus of the day on the stairs.

Its'relatively small size means it's perfect for such use, and can get in all the nooks and crannies you need to clean, as well. Yet its 2 amps (240 watts) of vacuum power seems strong enough for to get anything needing vacuuming. Unlike larger vacuums, this one is easy to carry up and down stairs, so cleaning up spills in the bathroom or elsewhere is no problem. Its small size also means it can get into tight crevices, and with a 25 foot cord, you can go the length of the stairs without plugging it in two different places. It even works well on walls and other vertical surfaces. The accumulated debris is vacuumed into a fairly large dust cup, which negates the requirement for any paper vacuum bags. Enjoy!

Great Little Vacuum!
I decided to get a handheld because, although I am pleased with my regular vacuum's performance on the carpet, I found using the attachments lacking in other vacuuming duties. This little vac complements my regular vacuum phenomenally!

It has a rotating brush which easily pulled the dog hair out of my chair (made from a tapestry material.) Does a great job on the stairs too! It has a long 25 foot cord. I have some old handheld vac that's been gathering dust. It was very noisy. Although this one's not silent, it is less noisy than that screaming jet engine thing in the closet. It's also less noisy than my regular vacuum. Lighter than that other old thing too.

Excellent product for pet owners!
This vacuum is great for small area rugs and hard to vacuum steps. We have a dog (yellow lab) that constantly sheds and this vacuum picks up the hair on his bed and other area rugs that show his hair. It has a long plug so it is easy to use in hard to get areas. I have tried other cordless vacuums that were useless and this is the first hand held vacuum that has worked well and is easy to use. I was amazed the first time I emptied the collection container at the amount of dust and dirt that this small vacuum was able to pick up. I was also tired of dragging our regular vacuum up and down the stairs and this vacuum has allowed me to do our stairs efficiently and quickly. I would definitely recommend this vacuum for pet owners!

Very good performance!
I bought mine 10 months ago, after yet another expensive vacuum of mine bit the dust. We didn't have much money at the time, so I came to Amazon.com and read the reviews here. I was concerned that a "cheap" and "plastic" vacuum could possibly vacuum my 2200 sf house with four kids and SIX indoor cats... but on the other hand, my broken vacuum wasn't cleaning ANYTHING. Even if this vacuum lasted for 3 months, I would consider that worth the money. So, in short, I bought what I thought would be a disposable vacuum cleaner, just something to tide us over until I could buy another "real" vacuum.

Well, we still don't need to replace it. It's holding up VERY well! It's hard to believe that they're continuing to sell this vacuum for so little, when its performance matches or excedes that of more expensive models. If/when this one bites the dust, I'll probably replace it with an identical vacuum. I'm that satisfied with its performance.

Every vacuum I've owned has needed occasional repair- clogged "works" (remember the six cats and four kids), problems with the revolving brush thingy, plastic pieces breaking off, etc... This vacuum has held together very well. I've had problems only with one roller-brush-thingy, which ended up being replaced for free under the warranty. Other than that, I've not had to work on this machine. My house is relatively large, too, so I'd definitely recommend it for any size house.

I've not had problems with the belt breaking too often, although it did break once when the roller-brush-thingy malfunctioned (stopped turning, and the belt broke as a result). $2.50 later, I had my favorite vacuum back.

So consider the price I paid and the job I've asked this poor machine to do... it's an incredibly good deal. It's powerful and reliable.

Entertainment For My Kids!
I must admit when I first saw the Eureka 5740A in person I was not impressed. I typically would have passed right by this vacuum based on the low price and the 13" width. I checked out all the other vacuums on the aisle before I decided to stick with the plan and put this one in my cart.

When I got home my son put it together within minutes (he couldn't wait to see what kind of disgusting filth was going to appear in the canister... he didn't have long to wait). Within seconds the canister was a dusty haze. Within minutes there was easily 1/2 cup of fluffy filth... and he had only vacuumed 1/4 of my master bedroom. Then he reluctantly let me vacuum the master bath. It picked the knap right up. I love the solid feel of this unit and the sound is no worse than my expensive Sharp. Best of all I could see the results! I also love having onboard attachments and even got my favorite old baseboard brush to fit the wand and found a place for it onboard. The 13" width doesn't bother me at all... in fact, it's wonderful for getting between the legs of my end tables!

We had new carpeting installed 18 months ago and I was really beginning to get annoyed with the way it is wearing. Now I know the problem was my old vacuum.

For the price I don't know how you can possibly beat this vacuum. It does have filters that need replacing, but I figure I can make them last a little longer by blowing them out with the air compressor (like I do the a/c filters). Even if you used this unit once to clean your whole house from top to bottom and threw it away you'd still pay less than a cleaning service would charge you for one visit.

While I have been writing this my son has cleaned all the carpeted floors in the house and shown me the results along the way. I really, really like this vacuum.

You Simply Will NOT Find a BETTER Cheap Vacuum!
If you take the time to check (for what it is worth) you'll notice I only review things I really, really respect and like.

Well, I LOVE this vacuum.

Please allow me to tell you why:

In the past (2) years I have purchased two--count them-- TWO Dirt Devil Swivel Glide vacuums. The first one did a really good job-- then fritzed. I somehow convinced myself it was my fault. (I'm a guy. I'm hard on shoes, prescription glasses and I fling vacuums around like sledgehammers... to name a few faults.)

So after a year-- with the first machine dying a slow devilish death-- I bought another Dirt Devil. 9 months pass and the second one starts wheezing and emitting a very uncomfortable burning smell. It was a different, yet still ignoble, death.

I was about to go out and buy another one when Common Sense decided to make a rare visit: I vacuum a 1100 sq. ft. space once --and no more than twice-- a week. At (2) times a week that means I only vacuum this relatively small space (that is mostly covered by furniture) no more than 104 times a year... But yet I'm replacing these vacuums like I own Dirt Devil stock.

So I go on Amazon.com. I read and read all these different reviews and I find out about the Eureka Litespeed. I'm impressed. A few reviews are negative-- but negative in a way that I felt I had to totally discount their views on the machine.

One reviewer said something like, "I had to empty the dustcup twice before I even finished vacuuming the first time!" Gee, the dust cup on this vacuum is REALLY BIG. Did it ever strike you that it pulled so much CRUD out of your carpet that having to empty the cup--even twice-- was a GOOD THING?!?

Another person wrote that the vacuum started getting louder as time went on. Well, I've had this vacuum for (4) months and it is a little louder than when I first got it. But guess what-- I didn't buy the thing to lull myself to sleep. I bought it to VACUUM my carpet and the ever so slightest change in volume doesn't faze me at all.

Here's my experiences with the Eureka, bottom line:

1) The first time I vacuumed, I had to empty the cup twice too. The second time I vacuumed, I had to empty the cup twice. Now, some four months later-- I have to empty the cup every other time I vacuum. (Not because the cup is completely full... Just because I prefer to do it that way.)

I was one of those people who could NOT conceive of buying a BAGLESS vacuum. Too messy, too cumbersome, too whatever.

Is the large refuse cup hard to empty? No. It's EASY. Frankly, most bottles of wine take longer to open... and NOT having to buy BAGS is extra special charming.

2) This vacuum has been performing FAR beyond even my highest expectations. NO performance drop off at all and it still LOOKS almost exactly the same as the day I bought it.

3) It is effortless to push (the old Devils and their long forgotten ilk where much harder to maneuver).

4) I started using this machine on apartment carpet that was at least (3) years old. [And please remember, I had been using "top of the line" Dirt Devils on the SAME carpet for almost (2) years.]

The very first day, the very first use-- the Eureka LIFTED the nap and fluffed up my carpet and made it look BRAND NEW! Think of the first time you've ever walked into a newly carpeted room or apartment... That's what this vacuum makes your carpet look like EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU USE IT... And the Eureka has been making my carpet look brand new EVERY use since.

5) And finally-- I almost hate to make this embarassing admission-- but this is how much I love this machine:

I was standing in Target the other day and I saw this complete stranger staring at all the vacuums lined against the wall. I watched her for a while until she picked up a Bissel (that had been very poorly reviewed on this site) and started putting it into her cart.

Trying not to act like a complete nutjob-- I walked up to her and asked why she picked that vacuum. She said she had been looking at all of them for 30 minutes and had just decided for some inexplicable reason to buy the Bissel.

I told her if she was just looking at boxes and pictures that-- based on my experiences-- she had to get this Eureka Litespeed. I then showed her the vacuum's more than adequate features, etc... Basically, I turned into instant Super Eureka Vacuum Cleaner Salesman.

Much to my surprise-- the young lady didn't actually slink away from me in horror... She actually THANKED me for all my help and said she couldn't believe a complete stranger would actually stop to help her with something like this-- especially in this day and age.

Then she bought the Eureka vacuum!

I walked out of the store, still red in the face... realizing that I needed to get over this obsession with my Eureka vacuum and get a real life.

So that's why I decided to write this review.

I figured if I could help people find a SUPERB low cost vacuum on such a huge site like Amazon.com then maybe I could also rid myself of the need to walk up to complete strangers in Target stores and sell them this vacuum. (Especially since I get no payment from Eureka for my efforts.)

The first lady was nice. I might not be so lucky the second time. :-)

Eureka belts
We bought the vacuume cleaner from Costco less than a year ago,
and the belts break every so often. I wonder why. We never had to change belts when we were using Hoover's.

I keep buying them, so what does that mean?
Ok, I have had my upright for about 3 years and go through a belt a month. I have it in right, and even took it to the shop to let them put it in, and it still breaks or burns up in a month. I don't blame it entirely on just the belt, I'm sure the sweeper plays a part.

Minus the shipping charges, Amazon does have a good price on them.
